A German princess donated the money for the construction out of gratitude that her groom had returned unharmed from the Battle of the Turks in Vienna in 1683. The construction was commissioned by the abbot of the Obermarchtal monastery (Alb-Donau-Kreis; between Sigmaringen and Ulm) Niklaus II.
