"The LWL Museum of Archeology Westfälisches Landesmuseum in Herne is a state museum of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL), which focuses on the 250,000-year history of mankind in Westphalia in the research laboratory The museum was opened on March 28, 2003. A first collection of archaeological finds from Westphalia was opened in Münster in 1836, supervised by the Association for the History and Antiquities of Westphalia, Abbot of Munster. In 1908 the collection was reopened The archaeological department received its own rooms in 1930 and became independent in 1934 as a state museum for pre- and early history.
After the destruction of the museum building during bombing in 1943 and 1945, a new building was built from 1963 to 1970. In 1980, the museum was renamed the "Westfälisches Museum für Archeologie". After the decision of the Landschaftsversammlung Westfalen-Lippe to relocate the museum, the collection in Münster was closed in 2001 and in 2003 the new building in Herne was opened. In 2007 the museum was housed in "LWL Museum of Archeology. Westphalian State Museum "renamed. The largest part of the 6,800 square meter museum is located underground. Only the cube-shaped entrance building and the light halls above the two largest exhibition rooms tower out of the ground. Designed by the architects of Busse Klapp Brüning, the building was awarded the distinction of good buildings 2003 and the Architecture Prize North Rhine-Westphalia 2004 by the Association of German Architects in NRW. The building is handicapped accessible and offers besides the exhibitions, conference rooms on the ground floor and a cinema in the basement.
