The monastery complex on the (half) island in Lake Wigry is well worth seeing.

The Camaldolese monastery is located on a hill in a wonderful landscape in the middle of the Wigry National Park with over 40 lakes. The Catholic Hermit Order founded one of 12 monasteries in Poland here in 1694.

On a peninsula, surrounded by Lake Wigry, which is up to 72 meters deep, the monastery offers a fantastic view of the landscape of the national park.

The castle-shaped complex, built in the baroque style from bricks, was damaged several times over the centuries, almost completely destroyed in the First World War and especially in the Second World War.

Reconstruction began as early as 1950. The last monks left the Koster 200 years ago. The monastery has been rented to the Polish state since 1973, renovated and expanded into a cultural center.

“Living alone with God and for God alone.”

The hermits' 12 white-painted small houses are now rented to visitors from all over the world. Source: masuren.de

You live in the monastery cells of the hermits. The monastery lights go out at 9 p.m. Another night song is sent out into the landscape. Then it is pitch black. A morning song wakes you up at 7 a.m.
