Bike Touring Highlight
Best known building of the Nordsternpark. It is about 100 meters long and 36 meters high and was inaugurated in 1996.
There are two more double arched bridges in the Nordsternpark, but they are smaller: one is located above the Emscher and the other is across the Lehrhovebruch road.

The asymmetrical steel structure, the name of which Grimberger Sichel was selected in a citizens' competition, crosses the canal in a semicircular arch on the western edge of the harbor. Only hanging on a 48 meter high steel pylon on the north side of the canal, the curved bridge has a span of about 150 meters. The northern ramp is formed by concrete retaining walls, the southern one is built as an earth dam. Over 600 cubic meters of concrete and 235 meters of large bored piles were used for the abutments as well as 400 tons of steel and 465 meters of rope for the suspended structure.
The bridge was awarded the European Steel Bridges Award 2010 by the European Convention for Steel Construction. This recognizes outstanding steel bridge constructions in Europe.

The Rhine-Herne Canal leads from the Rhine to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. It branches off from the Duisburg port canal at basin C at canal kilometer 0.16 and connects the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports with the West German canal network. The connecting canal to the Ruhr branches off at canal kilometer 1.4. From Oberhausen, the canal follows the straightened Emscher to the south and largely parallel to it. A conceivable naming similar to the Lippe side canal as "Emscher side canal" was common in the planning phase.Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhein-Herne-Kanal

Well, a bridge. Nice to look at and quite practical to get dry feet on the other side of the canal.

The arched bridge, a beautiful swinging structure with a view of the Rhine-Herne Canal! Opposite the amphitheater in the middle of the Nordsternpark! It is worth making a detour from the canal here if you are out and about by bike or on foot! There is also a restaurant with a beer garden and a playground for the little ones!

The feet of the arch bridge are well lit! Nice to look at in the dark! No matter whether from the top of the bridge or from the bottom of the Rhine-Herne Canal! Definitely a highlight!

The double arch bridge is a pedestrian or cyclist bridge over the Rhine-Herne Canal and connects the Gelsenkirchen districts of Hessler and Horst. It was completed in 1997 on the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show on the site of the former Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen. The Horster colliery produced the first coal in 1868 and was the northernmost mine at that time - hence the name "Nordstern".Source: lokalkompass.de/gelsenkirchen/c-kultur/die-rote-doppelbogenbruecke-im-nordsternpark_a950022
