The Morgenbrodstaler ditch
The Morgenbrodstaler Graben below the Ifenkopf and the Ifenkopfer cliff
The Morgenbrodstaler Graben is part of the complex Dammgraben system and runs along the slopes north of the upper Sösetals and its side valleys. It starts at Morgenbrodsbach and flows into the ditch a few dozen meters before the beginning of the Sperberhaier dam near the Großer Kolk. The moat is about 4100 meters long and is mainly fed by the water derived from the Great Söse. This once served in the mines of the Clausthaler district as a power to drive the local water wheels. Even today, it transports around 1,800,000 m³ of water per year across the Dammgraben in the direction of Clausthal-Zellerfeld.
The construction of the Morgenbrodstaler Graben began at the beginning of the 18th century, many years before the Sperberhaier Damm was built. At that time, the miners still assumed that this large "Harzäquadukt" had to be made much higher. For this reason, the Morgenbrodstaler ditch is actually too high and has on its last few meters before the confluence with the ditch a very steep slope. The former economic road along the Graben is today a beautiful and varied hiking trail. In many places you can enjoy scenic views of the Sösetal, such as on the seven-week cliff. Numerous signs along the way give information about the characteristics of the Morgenbrodstaler Graben as well as its function and history. The "Sperberhaier Dammhaus", "Morgenbrodstaler Graben" and "Stieglitzecke" parking lots on the Bundesstraße 242 are good starting points for a hike on the Morgenbrodstaler Graben. From the last-mentioned car park, a steep path leads you first downhill past the Sösestein and the upper reaches of the Großen Söse. About 200 vertical meters below the main road then you reach after about 1500 meters route the old moat at the confluence of this raging mountain stream. As an active part of the dam ditch system, the Morgenbrodstaler Graben today is a listed building. It is also part of the cultural monument "Upper Harz Water Regale" and since 2010 also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
