The system, consisting of five individual caves, is located on the left slope at the entrance to the Wellheim Urdonautal valley, northwest of the village of Mauern. The seven cave entrances are located approximately 20 meters above the valley floor at approximately 425 meters above sea level. The area surrounding the caves is designated as the Mauerner Höhlen nature reserve. The total length of the cave system is 121 meters, with a total area of approximately 600 square meters. The caves are accessible via an unpaved footpath. Due to the risk of cave-ins and to protect against grave robbers, the entrances have been barred since 1977.
