The following article inspired me to search for Lanken Castle today:

The former Lanken Castle was not located near the current Lanken estate, but almost a quarter of a mile southeast of the farm near the highway between the Dreweskamp paddock and the Ellernholz surcharge in a meadow, where the old castle site can still be found today, an 8-foot high, bushy, round hill about 50 feet in diameter, surrounded by the remains of a moat. In the moat, a hewn beam, a horse's tooth and many fragments of bricks were found during a subsequent excavation, and in the surrounding area, in addition to a lot of rubble, a large number of palisades, one of which contained a four-inch lead cross, and a brass bowl.

To the northwest of the hill, a double stone pavement was found, one on top of the other.

In 1349, this castle, at that time a robber's castle, was taken by the Lübeckers in conjunction with Duke Erich von. Saxony and Count Johann the Mild of Holstein; it was rebuilt, but completely collapsed in the 16th century (see above).

In the Ratzeburg tithe register (around 1230), Lanken does not appear anywhere. According to legend, a spring near Lanken was once a health spring visited by strangers; however, at least at present this spring does not contain any medicinal additives.

Looking for the Lanken castle ruins ....

When I open the Komoot map on the PC, Lanken Castle is displayed nearby. Unfortunately, it cannot be seen in the Komoot map via the Android app on the smartphone.

A few years ago I hiked there with Marlies and Buddy, but unfortunately I couldn't find a castle or the remains of it. I found a post on the Internet today that mentions a hill and the remains of a moat. I find old castles fascinating and so today I went looking again.

Unfortunately, even today I couldn't even begin to discover a castle ruin or at least a sign. It's all overgrown and I didn't want to get through the waist-high nettles with my shorts today. I'll try again in winter, then hope for more success and some better photos.
