    Hiking

The impressive Charcoal Kins were used as a source of fuel for the nearby silver mines in the Panamint Range. Built during the 19th Century they are still well preserved and worth a visit. If you are lucky, you might encounter some wild donkey that now inhabit this area.
These ten beehive-shaped charcoal kilns are among the best preserved in the west, they still smell of smoke today. Completed in 1876/77 by Swiss masons of the Modock Consolidated Mining Company to provide a source of fuel suitable for use in two smelters adjacent to their group of lead-silver mines in the Argus Range west of Panamint Valley, about 25 miles distant from the kilns. The last 2 miles of gravel road to the kilns are passable to most vehicles. Located in upper Wildrose Canyon in the Panamint Mountains, at the trailhead to Wildrose Peak (4.2 miles). nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/panamintspringsarea.htm
