Spremberg was the geographic center of the German Empire from 1871 to 1920. The calculations for this went back to the geographer Heinrich Matzat, a senior teacher at the Spremberger Realgymnasium. The basis of his calculation was that he determined the mean values of the northernmost, southern, eastern and western locations of the then German Reich. He published the result in the annual report of the higher education institutions in 1872. The original stone was recovered in March 1988 during the preparation of road construction work and is on display in the local history museum in Spremberg. On January 19, 1991, a copy of the stone was erected just a few meters from the original site.
