"... Around the old parish church of St. Johann there is a ring development of small storage houses and other historical buildings, including the Archidiakonatshof. The special setting invites you to linger and has already inspired some filmmakers. Noticeable when entering the square from Frußgängerstrasse / Long street out is the crucifixion group on the high plinth on the north side of the tower: Christ and the two thieves. These minor figures are early Baroque and probably by Heinrich Gröninger (1579 -1631). The church square is one of the few originally preserved church squares in West Germany. .. . "

The St. John's Church, which dates back to 1234, is in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral. This church was built as a so-called step hall church. Gothic remodels of the originally Romanesque church can be seen on the north side, for example. On this side there is also a crucifixion group from the 17th century. The church's furnishings include the late Gothic sacraments house, a triumphal cross and a double-beam Madonna from the 15th century. The baptismal font with its eight reliefs, which among other things show the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, also dates from the same time. In the immediate vicinity of the towering church tower are worth seeing warehouses, which were inhabited by poorer citizens of Billerbeck in the 16th century.
