The lake is a gravel pit lake, created as a result of sand and gravel mining from the late 1960s to the 1980s. Initially, it was popularly called "Lago Laprello" (the gravel pit lake in the Heinsberg district of Lieck is also called Lago Laprello, after the gravel mining company). It was later officially named after Adolf Freiherr Spies von Büllesheim from Ratheim, who was a member of the Bundestag for the Heinsberg district at the time.

Four bunkers remain as remnants of the West Wall, which were blown up after the Second World War but - unlike many other bunkers in the region - were not demolished. They can be seen as islands in Lake Adolfo.
