The Rostock Heath is a very special area, because for the entire German coast it is unique that such a large forest area borders the lake. Orchids and kingfishers, brooding cranes and century-old yew trees make the heath worthy of protection. The climate of forest and sea air is unique. Well over 5000 hectares of the area are wooded, the remaining 1000 hectares are bogs, meadows and reed areas. A branched network of ditches and streams runs through the region.
