The fountain was created and used in 1980 as a drinking trough for cattle. In 1999 it was bordered and since then all of its water has been fed to the Klein Briesener Bach. The inflow helps ensure that the creek does not dry up completely during the low-rainfall seasons. The red color of the sediment is caused by oxidation and deposition of the iron dissolved in the groundwater when it comes into contact with air.

Interesting little source, but the small area around the meandering little river that develops from it is much nicer :)
