The castle, built around 1260, is still the largest medieval ruin with upright masonry in Stuttgart. From 1369 to 1753, the Lords of Neuhausen were the local and castle lords of Hofen.

The Hofen castle ruins are the only castle complex in the city of Stuttgart with towering remains of the wall. Their task was to secure the Neckar crossing (ford and ferry) and a trade route.
Around 1250 the castle was built next to the existing village. A knight Luithart von Mühlhausen appears in the documents at this time, and his son Kuno is also named von Hofen.
The castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, in 1783 partially removed (the stones were used for the new construction of the Church of St. Barbara and other buildings in Hofen). In 1999 the state capital Stuttgart bought the castle and restored it.
