The original Dankwarderode Castle was destroyed by fire in the 13th century. The palace was rebuilt in 1616. After another fire in 1873, only one ruin remained, which the city acquired in 1878. Around 1900 the city building councilor Ludwig Winter reconstructed and rebuilt it in its current form.

Today the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum's Medieval Department is located there.
