The name "Blaumühle" is not, as one might assume, due to the blue-black slate cladding, but rather to the activity of "Blauens" or "Bleuens", ie "beating". Not only the blue mill found here, but also other mills with this name were in their early days hammer mills or "hammer mills".
First mentioned in 1631 as "Blomohle", the blue mill has influenced the fate of many families over the centuries. The last grain miller residing here, Johannes Grebestein, could not feed the mill, so he left it in 1906. In the same year on 09/21/1906 it was read in the "Tageblatt" that Mr. brush manufacturer Hauck from Eschwege had acquired the blue mill in order to set up a branch of his factory there.

There used to be a total of six mills in Frankershausen. Many are no longer recognizable today because they have been rebuilt. Although the Blaumühle is privately owned, it is also worth seeing from the outside. It has had a new mill wheel since 2017, which ensures the energy supply for the residents.
The history of the mills can be experienced on a walk through the town and its immediate surroundings using the information boards lovingly designed by the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land together with the municipality of Berkatal.
