Tiefengruben is a Rundplatzdorf in the middle Ilmtal and stands since 1976 completely under monument protection. The town center is the church and the village pond. It is located about 4 kilometers from the center of Bad Berkas (Wikipedia). In Rundplatzdörfern all houses are arranged around the church and the village square. The farms go star-shaped away from the village center and formed a protective wall around the center. In founding times, this type of village had only one driveway and is mainly found in formerly Slavic populated areas.

The location is surrounded by orchards. The historical stock was scientifically documented in the 1990s. It was found that there was an unusually large number of older and very old fruit tree varieties out of the 920 trees examined: 55 apple varieties and 27 pear varieties as well as 6 varieties that could not be determined at the time. The oldest specified apple variety was first mentioned in 1613 as a royal short stem (Wikipedia).
