On the north side of Querfurt's market square is the town hall, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century, but in its present form is strongly influenced by a conversion by Gottfried Weichelt in 1698. During this conversion, which was the result of several city fires in the 17th century, the six-story archive tower with rustic portal, round-arched arbour, tail cap and lantern was also built south of the town hall. It still characterizes the square today and bears the year 1701 on its roof flag.[1] A watchman lived in the tower until 1945, as Johannes Schlaf reports in his thingy stories.
