The bridge houses of Bad Kreuznach stand on the old Nahe bridge and represent an architectural specialty. They were built from the 15th century due to a lack of space and are nowadays much photographed landmarks of the city.

Architectural delicacies and symbols of Bad Kreuznach are the bridge houses, which were built from 1480 due to lack of space.

The bridge houses are built in timber frame construction and stand on the old Nahe bridge. It was built as a stone bridge in 1300. On eight pillars it bridged the two arms of the Nahe that flow through the city: the Nahe and the mill canal. Only the bridge over the mill canal has been preserved in its historical form as a pillar bridge. The Alte Nahebrücke was the intersection of two highways and at that time also served as part of the city wall ring. Actually one was not allowed to build on this bridge. But because it became too narrow in the city wall, citizens gradually built these "black buildings" on the pillars between 1480 and 1600. The powder chambers of the bridge fortifications later served as the basement of the bridge houses.

The sight of the bridge houses from the Geißenbrücke on the Mühlenteich, only a few steps away from the Pauluskirche, is particularly impressive.
The characteristic construction can be seen from this point of view. The protruding part of the house is supported by wooden struts, which means that the flood hardly finds any attack surface. A cannonball is attached to the front of a bridge house, a memento from the time of the siege and conquest of the city by the Spaniards and Swedes in the Thirty Years' War (1620 and 1632).
