The construction of the Rehberg tunnel began on September 10th, 1861. The drive was carried out simultaneously from the east portal and the west portal. In addition, four shafts were created on the tunnel axis. The excavation was first promoted from these shafts with reels, later with horses and finally with old steam locomotives, which first had to be transported to the construction sites over the poor forest paths of the Egge Mountains.

The operation of the steam locomotives required around 480 tons of hard coal.

The miners had to struggle against severe water ingress, which often led to the work being stopped. Only after adequate water drainage had been ensured could the work be continued with determination.

After the ridge and the bottom tunnels, the tunnel profile was completely excavated and lined immediately. The entire tunnel length of 1632 m was divided into twelve sections, which were worked on at the same time so that all construction sections were completed roughly at the same time. The keystone of the brick lining was laid on June 19, 1864, five days later, on June 24, the first locomotive passed through the tunnel, which was officially put into operation on October 1, 1864.

It's a nice idea that Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners and tunnel builders, is remembered here at the west portal of the Rehberg Tunnel. 👍
