The Canada War Museum of Mr. Gilbert Van Landschoot was opened on June 28, 1995 by the Representative

of His Majesty the King, and many Belgian and Canadian prominent figures in Adegem - Maldegem. This became a private museum

founded as a result of a promise to his father who suffered a heart attack in 1987. On his deathbed he revealed

the role he had played during World War II, something he had never talked about.

He told how, all alone, without involving family or friends, he had hidden people from

the Nazis. He owed his life to the liberators. His father Maurits Van Landschoot asked his son

Gilbert to someday give back in gratitude to Canadians. And hereby inherit his father's code of conduct which read: ONCE THE CANADIANS AND THE POLES DID SOMETHING FOR ME,

Historical museum about the Occupation and Liberation period 1940 - 1944

Museum tour takes you chronologically through time. Starting with the mobilization period - occupation period etc... Duration, you will quickly need 2 hours here to visit the Canada Museum alone. This of course depends on how much you want to read and admire the viewing cabinets.

Here we zoom in on the occupation period in Maldegem. A military airfield was operational in the area around Maldegem during the German occupation.

Furthermore, many viewing cabinets with lifelike war scenes. Quite early in the museum tour you can watch a short film about the Liberation Days “Operation Switchback” in the fall of 1944.

We chose to watch the English version, which comes across as more professional.
