The Ilten Church, as it appears to visitors today, is a “child” of the Baroque period. The current nave was built in 1723, at the beginning of the High Baroque period. The builders used many materials from the previous church building, which stood on the same site.

The striking church tower dates to the 12th century. At that time it also had the function of a defensive tower. The church bells, which were cast in the 14th century and still ring the bells of the church today, also refer to the long history of the church location.

The baroque church is one of the oldest church buildings in the area that has been preserved and is still in use today. The focus is on the baroque altar, which was carved from lime wood by the Hildesheim sculptor Ernst Dietrich Bartels. The extensive restoration was successfully completed in 2010.
