Stadtturm Lich

The striking and widely visible city tower can be described as the city’s landmark.

The city tower in Lich is a 50 meter high medieval fortress tower and symbol of the city. It was built in 1306 and was part of the original fortifications. Several modifications were made up until the 17th century. The cultural monument houses the bells of the neighboring Marienstiftskirche.

At first glance, the city tower looks as if it were the church tower of the Marienstiftskirche. In fact, it is part of the historic city fortifications and was built as a defense tower and observation tower. The premises were also used as a prison. But there is still a close connection to the neighboring church, because it has been used as a bell tower since the 16th century.
