The old Hollerwetter lighthouse is a rare combination of a residential building with an integrated lighthouse. It has been out of service since 1982 and has since been replaced by a modern leading light line consisting of upper and lower lights in the immediate vicinity. A leading light line is formed from two independently erected lighthouses. When brought under cover, they mark the fairway. The upper fire is larger than the lower fire. This enables a clear differentiation and the upper fire is not covered. The relationship between the upper and lower lights is shown by an identical identifier. Viewed from the ship in the safe fairway, both lights are on top of each other. If, on the other hand, you see the lower light when approaching to the left of the upper light, you must hold to port. If the lower light is to the right of the upper light when approaching, you must hold to starboard.

After the Hollerwetter lighthouse was decommissioned in 1982, there was a long struggle to find a color scheme that was appropriate for monument use, as the tower should not be confused with an active navigation mark. In 1911 the tower was initially white with black highlights. Today the tower is dark red with light gray contrasts. The tower is a well-preserved relic of lighthouse architecture in Germany at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It stands for a design of the lower lights on the Elbe, which, in contrast to the steel lattice towers of the upper lights, were partly built with an integrated house for the lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse is also a reminder of the expansion of the traffic control system for shipping on the Lower Elbe in the Wilhelmine era.
