The central monument in the former "Fort I." of Cologne's city fortifications - an eagle cast from cannons stands on a very high stone pedestal - of the area in the southern part of the city, not far from the banks of the Rhine, which is known today under the symbolic name "Friedenspark", is from the mother of all Cologne-speaking music groups - the "Bläck Fööss" - was sung about with the anti-war song "Unger'm Adler" (under the eagle).

The park, which was planned by garden director Fritz Encke around the fort / part of the Cologne fortification ring, which was ground down in 1919, offers children in particular a great adventure landscape. It was not until 1985 that the unnamed park was named Friedenspark.

Overgrown ruins, old fortress walls, winding paths and huge trees: This extraordinary mix gives the Friedenspark a flair of times gone by. Even the writer Heinrich Böll liked to play here as a little boy. Nevertheless, the park in the south of Neustadt between Agrippinaufer and Alteburger Straße does not enjoy the fame it really deserves.

The four and a half hectare park was built on the historic site of the former Prussian Fort I. The military used the brick bulwark with the ditches and ramparts for defense until 1911.

In 1914, the Cologne horticultural director Fritz Encke converted the section into a public park, integrating the old fortifications and moats into the concept.

The 15-meter-high memorial in the park, inaugurated in 1927, with its huge eagle, made from cannons from the First World War, draws attention to itself. The monument commemorates the soldiers who died at the time. A youth center is located in the fort today, and there is a construction playground at the back. Tools, games or sports equipment, for example, can be borrowed in the indoor and outdoor rooms.

In the Peace Park, walkers can find peace and quiet on the paths around the old rock walls. The facility also has a lot to offer for children and recreational sports enthusiasts.
