Construction of the port began in May 1938. Work was stopped in the spring of 1943, although large parts, including 3 warehouses, the port railway system and the connection to the PX industrial railway, had already been completed. However, the connections to the Elster-Saale Canal and the Karl-Heine Canal were unfinished. As a result, the port was not accessible by water until 2015.
