Saint Laurentius, to whom this church in Dillhausen is consecrated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was archdeacon of the Pope and had been asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the treasure to the church. Laurentius asked for three days' time, meanwhile distributed the church property among the poor inhabitants of Rome and after the agreed time came with the poor to the emperor in order to present them to him as the treasure of the church. Thereupon he was martyred to death, legend has it that he was alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of St. Lawrence - roasted over coals. He is said to have been of good cheer and told his executioner, on the one hand, whether he would not turn it around.
The feast day of Saint Lawrence in the saints calendar is August 10th.

The Roman Catholic branch church of Dillhausen-Mengerskirchen belongs to the parish of Holy Cross, Oberlahn, Diocese of Limburg.
The first church was built around 900 under the patronage of St. Lawrence. All that remains of the old late Romanesque fortified church today is the church tower, in which hang four church bells, the two oldest of which date from 1451 and 1517. The present neo-Romanesque basilica, built of rubble stone, was built between 1893 and 1904. The nave consists of a central nave and two side aisles. A semicircular apse is attached to the choir in the east. The façade in the west is flanked by stair towers leading to the galleries. Another stair tower stands opposite the church tower. The central nave is covered by a coffered ceiling, and the choir has a barrel vault.
