The underground tunnel system consisted of shelters, ditches, galleries and passages, but also ammunition stores and communication passages. Tunnels were dug on every hill in the very heart of the city; this created a wide network, and the largest tunnels lie under the hills of Monte Zaro, Monte Ghiro and Kaštel.
Kaštel, which served as a barracks, observation post, camp and prison during the Austro-Hungarian period, hides two tunnels under its slopes. One runs just under the fortress, while the other is at the bottom of the hill. Its length is about 400 m and above all it connected the narrower city center. In the middle is a central space to which the underground tunnels run and meet, and which can be entered from four different sides below Kaštel. The entrances are carefully planned so that the system has good air circulation. The temperature is between 14 - 18 degrees Celsius all year round.

Of course, you can also reach the fort on normal routes through the city or you can take the path in the tunnel and use the elevator in the tunnel 😉.

Admission can be paid at any of the 4 entrances. The tickets have a barcode with which you can let yourself in or out at the scanner at the entrances or exits. So you can leave the fort and return to Zerostrasse after a visit.

The underground tunnels of Pula, Zero Street, stretch under the whole city of Pula, they appeared during World War I as shelters in case retreat was necessary during air raids on the city.
