Those who visit Marienglashöle should not only enjoy the fascination of the underground world. And not only the beautiful forest location is worth a look. In the area invites Friedrichroda with its well-maintained spa facilities. And in the other direction, the Kneipp spa Tabarz is worth seeing. Between the two (and continue to Gotha) runs the Thuringian Forest Railway, a tram in cross-country traffic.

In 1784, according to another source in 1787, the gypsum mining process started off with a large cavity created by leaching, which was completely lined with gypsum crystals and therefore called the Crystal Grotto. After the discovery, the degradation of the crystals began. Customers were mainly churches and monasteries (Wikipedia).

The Marienglashöhle does not come up with any spectacular interior, but it is impressive, especially considering the time and under which conditions this cave was dug.
A suitable lighting and information boards as well as dedicated guides complete the whole thing.
And if it is too narrow or too cold in the cave, we recommend the restaurant or beer garden next to the entrance. Home cooking at fair prices.

Next to the Saalfeld fairy grottoes probably the most beautiful walk-in cave in Thuringia.

Highly recommended excursion destination in the heart of the Thuringian Forest, for young and old, easily accessible on foot and accessible by bike, car or forest train.

Please wear non-slip footwear, because it is very slippery on the wet rock
