When you walk or cycle over the Asselkouter, you cannot ignore this impressive concrete colossus. This is Bunker AV4 (also referred to as FM16 within the lines), a strategic, advanced bunker of the historic Ghent Bridgehead.
Built in the interwar period, this specific bunker was equipped with heavy Maxim machine guns. Together with the surrounding posts, it had a wide, clear field of fire over the lower fields to the east to protect Ghent from enemy troops.
