The origins of the Neurathen rock castle, which was built on the northern border of the Kingdom of Bohemia, are obscure, but archaeological finds in the area of the castle suggest settlement as early as the Bronze Age. Historians assume that it was created in the course of securing the border of the March of Meißen against Bohemia under Henry the Illustrious around 1245.

This year, Heinrich received Wehlen Castle, which is a few kilometers downstream. There is neither written nor archaeological evidence that it was partly assumed to have originated in the 11th century. The castle was first mentioned in writing indirectly on November 29, 1261 in a document according to which Pope Urban IV commissioned the provost of St. Thomas in Leipzig to resolve a dispute between the Bishop of Meißen and various Bohemian feudal lords, including Teodoricus de Raten to settle the embezzlement of episcopal property. From the second documented mention from 1289 in an exchange agreement between the Bohemian King Wenceslaus II and Friedrich Clem, the Lord of Dresden, it is clear for the first time that a castrum existed in Rathen. At that time The castle complex became a Bohemian fief, which it remained until 1426.

It is definitely worth entering here, nobody sits in the house in the winter months, there is a trustworthy cash register. It is also not so crowded in the winter months.
