Today's rather unspectacular Castle Styrum is one of the oldest manors on the Ruhr.

In place of an old farm estate on a sand bank of the Ruhr, which had been in the hands of the Counts of Altena since the early 13th century[1], Count Dietrich of Altena-Isenberg, a son of Friedrich von Isenberg, together with his son Eberhard I, had the first castle house built in 1289. The count's family had been among the losers in the Battle of Worringen in 1288 and had therefore had to flee from their ancestral seat, Limburg an der Lenne, to Styrum in front of the advancing troops of the winners. Dietrich's younger son Johann received Styrum in an inheritance division after 1301 and founded the Limburg-Styrum branch of the family, whose ancestral seat the small complex developed into in the following years. The construction work probably carried out during this time was just sufficient to make Styrum usable as a residence, but the buildings are still referred to as the Oberhof in 1350,[2] which suggests a lack of representative architecture. It was not until the 14th/15th century that the family built its first representative manor house.[2] When Count Wilhelm I of Limburg-Styrum was granted the lordship by Emperor Friedrich III in 1442, the property was also granted the status of an imperial fief, which it retained until the beginning of the 19th century.

Small but fine castle in a haunted park. In the castle you can enjoy fine Italian cuisine and go outside stroll.
