The Tikkebroeken is a characteristic Kempen peat bog. Low moor areas have many different landscapes: alder forest, hay meadow, gale field, wet and dry heath, grazing meadow, pine forest and fields. This diversity is due to the way the landscape was used in the past.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, peat was still extracted in the Tikkebroeken. Later, mud (a combination of silt and dead aquatic plants) was extracted from the remaining pond to fertilize the fields in the area. In addition, an alder forest was created in the Tikkebroeken through coppice management, dry heathland was mowed and felled and wet heathland was sown. The meadows were also hayed and the higher sandy soils were managed as fields.

The walks through Tikkebroeken take you through all the landscapes and will not be boring for a second.
