The shield boring machine T.R.U.D.E., an acronym for Tief Runter Unter Die Elbe,
was the largest tunnel boring machine in the world at the time, with an outer diameter of 14.20 meters. For the expansion of the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg, a 2,560-meter-long fourth tunnel was bored beneath the Elbe Riverbed between October 1997 and March 2000 using the shield boring method. The tunnel boring machine, weighing over 2,000 tons, removed approximately 400,000 cubic meters of sand, gravel, and rock at an average speed of 6 meters per day.

The TRUDE cutter wheel, featuring "mixshield technology"—with five spokes accessible from the inside for the first time to replace the cutting tools—and an independently controllable center cutter below the groundwater level, was developed by Herrenknecht of Schwanau and weighs 380 tons alone. A particular challenge was the wide range of very different soil conditions (silt, sand, boulders, tree trunks, duckweed, etc.). For this purpose, TRUDE was equipped with 111 scraper blades for soft rock and 31 roller bits for hard rock. Larger boulders could be crushed with a rock crusher.

Thanks to the support of numerous companies and private individuals, the cutting wheel has been on display as a technical monument on the grounds of the Museum of Work in Hamburg-Barmbek since 2001.

All in all, the area of the Museum of Work is beautifully landscaped. Well suited to take a break. It is located on the Osterbekkanal and you can eat. The drill itself is impressive.
