The Fangenturm was part of the medieval fortifications that once enclosed Greifswald. It was first mentioned in 1329 in the city register as "Vangentorm". After the facilities in the area of the Schützenwall had been leveled in the 18th century and the Hansering was built in the 1970s, the 13.50 meter high tower was preserved as a rudiment. When the building later no longer met the requirements as a powder tower, the city leased it to the university in 1775, which, because of its height and location on the outskirts of the city, used the tower as an observatory for a while. The crenellated wreath was only put on in the middle of the 19th century when the fan tower was even used as a public lavatory. After extensive maintenance and renovation work in the 1990s, the harbor master of the museum harbor was able to move into his office on the ground floor. He has organizational responsibility for the port with over 50 berths, which are reserved exclusively for seaworthy traditional ships.
