The Fangenturm was part of the medieval fortifications that once enclosed Greifswald. It was first mentioned in 1329 in the city register as "Vangentorm". After the facilities in the area of the Schützenwall had been leveled in the 18th century and the Hansering was built in the 1970s, the 13.50 meter high tower was preserved as a rudiment.
