The Nordost natural swimming lake, better known to Leipzig locals as "the excavator," is located in the Thekla district. It was originally created as a gravel pit starting in 1933/34, before being transformed into a recreational area in the 1970s and designated a landscaped lake in 2004.
Today, thanks to good public transport connections, hiking and cycling trails, and amenities such as a Finnish sauna and a large playground, the approximately four-hectare lake is a popular spot for walkers, cyclists, and anglers.
