History wrote the Place de la Bastille in the year 1789. With the storm on the Bastille the French revolution and thus the rebellion of the simple people against the authority was introduced.
Today, Place de la Bastille is a large, busy square with the July pillar in the center. Next door is the new opera of Paris.

In its center stands the colonne de Juillet, dominated by the famous Génie de la Liberté, which commemorates the revolution of 1830. But the square is mostly known for another revolution: that of 1789. At that time, the prison was located there de la Bastille, symbol of the absolute power of the government of l'Ancien Régime.
