The story is told of Jan Kuiper the Baptist, who hid here in 1535 from the henchmen of the Bishop of Münster in a huge hollow tree with a trunk circumference of 11 m. According to the legend of "Anna Holmer and the Anabaptists"[3], the Anabaptist Jan Kuiper, who was fleeing from the henchmen of the Bishop of Münster, is said to have hidden in the hollowed-out, mighty tree in 1535 before he was discovered by Malbauern, who hid him on the Schulze Holmer farm in Samern. There, Anna Holmer, the Malbauern's daughter and runaway nun, fell in love with him. Kuiper is said to have later participated in setting up the Batenburger resistance group, which, following in the footsteps of the Münster Anabaptists, organized attacks on stately property in the wider area around Emlichheim.
