The town of Lübben is crossed by three waterways that are of interest to water holidaymakers - the Berste in the west, the main Spree in the center and the flood canal in the east. Four locks and additional weirs regulate the water level between the Upper and Lower Spreewald. The "Kleine Amtsmühle" lock is located on the main Spree. Other locks are the Große Amtsmühle on the flood canal and the "Spittelarche" lock on the Berste. There is another lock at the northern end of the Berste. All locks are self-service locks.
There are numerous differences in height to overcome in the canals and rivers between Cottbus in the Upper Spreewald and Schlepzig in the Lower Spreewald. Over 60 self-service locks help with this. Detailed instructions for locking are usually located directly at the lock.
