The Society of Music Friends of the Austrian Empire, founded in 1812 (today: Society of Music Friends in Vienna), essentially set itself three major tasks:
the organization of concerts
collecting all kinds of material to document music and musical life
running a conservatory.
The latter, often referred to as the Vienna Conservatory, developed into the leading musical training center of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, but had to be handed over to state management in 1909 as it had become too large for a private association to run; it first became an academy and finally what is now the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Friends of Music) fulfills the other two tasks it has set itself, today as it did in the past, organized privately and independently on a club basis. Their house is the so-called "Musikverein" (Vienna I, Bösendorferstraße 12), built according to plans by Theophil Hansen and opened in 1870. It is the third own building in the company's history.
