The foundations of the former cathedral date from the 12th century; the nave, the aisles, the facade and the towers were built in the 13th and 14th centuries; the side chapels, the choir and the apse date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The architects were inspired by Coutances Cathedral and also incorporated Norman limestone into the nave; the rest is made of granite. The turrets above the crossing and the portals are typically Breton.
From the park on the north side, between the church and the former episcopal palace (now the town hall), the visitor has a good overview of the wall of the northern transept with Romanesque elements.
The south side has a beautiful portal; above the rose window a kind of pulpit is visible, from where excommunications were pronounced.
The facade is dominated by two 50m high towers. The episcopal blessing was given from a terrace above the portal. A small door under the right tower was reserved for lepers.

Built in the 12th century on the remains of a Romanesque cathedral, Saint-Paul-Aurélien is a Gothic cathedral characterized by a 13th century limestone nave, a granite choir and 50-meter spiers. Open every day, all year round, Saint-Paul-Aurélien Cathedral houses numerous classified works and furniture.
