Nature reserve "Bahnwald"The 13.7 ha nature reserve covers the forest area on the western surface of a former railway yard between the railway line Schwerte-Fröndenberg, the road "Zum Wellenbad" and the eastern city limits. Here the forest continues on Holzwickeder side and there it is part of the nature reserve "Bahnwald" of the landscape plan Holzwickede, which includes the "Geisecker reservoir", a waters of outstanding ornithological importance.
This nature reserve is a former gravel area of the Federal Railway with individual islands of concrete slab foundations. The area was reforested after the war with poplars for which planting holes were blown into the concrete slab foundations. This results in a difficult reforestation with conventional planting methods.
The "Bahnwald" is an island-like habitat with a high ecological development potential for fauna and flora. It provides habitat especially for butterflies, ground beetles, amphibians, reptiles, bats and for z.T. Endangered bird species such as hawk, buzzard, colored and small woodpecker, various species of warblers, golden oriole, wryneck, nightingale and others.
