View from the observation tower on the Hohenmirsberger plate (near Pottenstein) into an active quarry where Malmkalke are mined. The here open-minded Kalkabfolgen are characterized by very good, horizontal Bankung and perpendicular to extending clefts. Along the vertical clefts, surface water can penetrate well into deeper rock layers and contribute to the karstification. Remarkable is the very low-grade soil formation on a thin layer of fine-grained periglacial weather debris.
