A coal kiln (short Meiler) is a covered pile of wood that is set on fire by a coal burner to produce charcoal.
Charcoal has been used to produce charcoal since ancient times. Charcoal is much lighter than felled wood and therefore easier to transport. In addition, charcoal generates much more heat. The coal plant was therefore an important economic branch in the early modern period.
On May 1st, Köhler Hubertus Birkelbach lights the charcoal burner in the Haard. The temporary oven will simmer for about three weeks until it is opened and the coal is removed.
