The Emscher-passage, colloquially but incorrectly called the Emscher-culvert, is a passage of the Emscher under the Rhine-Herne-Canal, a flat watercourse crossing in the Castrop-Rauxeler district Henrichenburg near the former Henrichenburg at canal kilometer 42.605. The structure is the largest of its kind in the Emscher area.
The three reinforced concrete tubes of the Emscher pass each have a diameter of 5.34 meters with a wall thickness of 85 centimeters. The design flood discharge to be conducted is 180 m³ / s.
When the branch canal of the Dortmund-Ems canal to Herne was built towards the end of the 1890s, a culvert structure was built. This was blown up during the occupation of the Ruhr in April 1923 in order to sabotage the transport of coal, and afterwards only makeshift repairs were made. Later, a parallel canal was built to replace it - the second journey, during which today's structure was erected and completed in 1929. The old route was separated from the canal in the course of the dismantling of the first passage and has been used for leisure and sport since then.
