The measured total length of the cave is 2185 meters, the visible part of the cave is 360 meters long.
The cave owes its name to the meerkats and female meerkats who, according to legends, once lived here. The great folk poet Johann Peter Hebel also incorporated the legend into some of his works.
The first written mention of a description of the cave (Erdmännleins Grub) comes from the mid-1750s.
The cave was electrified in 1899.

Parking is available enough.
To strengthen the homonymous country inn in the center of hazel is recommended.
Over the winter, the cave is closed.
