Tips

  • The 18th-century spider mill near Nijhuizum, also known as the Monnikenburenmolen (Monks' Mill), is notable for its unique thatched lower tower. Until 1935, it was powered by wind, after which it was diesel-powered. Thanks to restoration, the mill has been preserved and designated as a national monument and a reserve pumping station. Volunteer millers keep it running; it can often be visited on Saturdays.
