The church was built according to the designs of Aladár and Bertalan Árkay. As a gesture of national cohesion in the country, the foundation of the votive church, inaugurated in 1926 - on the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács - was used by 3,000 Hungarian villages and towns. The mosaics and the domed windows were only made after the Second World War. Inside the church, the gilded Madonna and Child is particularly impressive. A sculpture by Imre Varga depicting King Lajos II has been standing next to the church since 2006: he died in the battle of Mohács.
