The industrialization of Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries would not have been possible without the production and processing of iron. Preferred locations were the low mountain ranges due to the ore deposits and the forest, which is important for smelting. This also applies to the Palatinate, where the Gienanth family (ennobled in 1835) built a regional iron empire.
