To get to the castle you have to climb a steep ramp, but needless to say, it is worth every pedal stroke to see this fabulous medieval fortress.

In the town of Gormaz you get a good idea of what this area must have looked like during the Middle Ages. The fortress on the town hill is truly imposing and it is easy to imagine how the Spanish national hero El Cid - lord of the castle and landlord of the town - led a counterattack here against the Moors after they attacked the population living at the foot of the castle in 1081. El Cid acted on his own initiative at the time, without asking permission from his king Alfonso. The retaliation included attacks on the nearby Muslim areas of the Taifa of Toledo, which was a strategic ally of King Alfonso VI at the time. This fact and the severity of the attack contributed to El Cid's first exile, to which he was sent that same year.

Each pedaling of the hard ramp of asphalt first, and then of grated concrete is worth it. I recommend stopping, if you find it open, during the ascent, at the Hermitage of San Miguel, with precious Romanesque paintings.

Something that few people know. In the west corner, the wall hides an engraved stone. It is actually a tombstone (possibly Roman). But that it had its function. The Arabs often put amulets on the west side of their buildings to scare away the "Djins", the demons of the night.

Do not miss the sunset from that side. It is incredible to see the sun set over the sickle that the Duero makes next to Vildé
